Visit the battlefields of Europe...

The first half of the 20th Century saw Europe reshaped by war in ways that still reverberate today. World War I (1914-18) and World War II (1939-45) engulfed the whole world in conflict, but many of the key battle sites and historical locations are situated in Europe. These places now contain museums, memorials, cemeteries and educational activities designed to help modern generations learn about the terrible events, the acts of human bravery and the development of technology that came out of the wars.

World War I

World War I, known at the time as "The Great War", ended just over 100 years ago in 1918. The effects on Europe were devastating, particularly on the northern regions of France and Belgium where trench warfare left hundreds of thousands dead through battles, bombardments and gas attacks. Canadian and ANZAC forces played pivotal roles throughout the war. Our itineraries below highlight different routes for visitors from each country, as well as giving an overview of the war as a whole.

World War II

World War II, coming only 21 years after the end of the Great War, again laid waste to much of Europe. Our itineraries below highlight different areas - from London, Paris and the Normandy D-Day beaches, to Austria and Germany, and Berlin and Poland. Studying the battles, learning about how populations lived during the Nazi occupations, visiting concentration camp memorials and understanding how the end of the war lead to the Cold War are hugely important activities for those studying this period of history.

Special activities

The itineraries below are samples designed to help you with clients interested in visiting Europe's battlefields. They can all be adapted as required and there are many additional special activities which can be included, such as living as a soldier in the trenches for a day, visiting sites associated with the Cold War in Berlin and Poland and performing at some of the cemeteries and memorial sites. We also have not been able to cover here all the sites and events of the wars. If you have a group that wants to include the Dunkirk Dynamo, sites related to the Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne or the memorial at Dachau, we can arrange that for you. Contact us for more details on any of these.

Field trip report from the Belgian battlefield sites

"In August 2018, I took part in a fam trip organised by Visit Flanders to discover further the battlefields in Flanders, Belgium and gain more insight into the visits and activities on offer for student and adult groups alike. Although I had a basic knowledge of the events of World War 1, visiting the sites where History happened was a real eye-opener. At the end of the trip, I had gained a better understanding of the military tactics in place during the battles as well as the extent of the human losses and the long-lasting impact of the war on the area."
