Wallpapers - April 2024

Welcome to April 2024!

We have looked at some folklore traditions across Europe already this year, but we wanted to continue on the theme this month as there are some fun aspects to April Fool’s Day (1st April) throughout the continent. April Fool’s Day (also known as All Fools Day) is traditionally about practical jokes, misunderstandings and general silliness! In some parts of Europe, some of the fun can result in good luck too!

Do drop us a line to let us know how you are doing and if you’ve experienced a good April 1st prank (or perhaps you were the instigator?)! We love hearing from you!

We hope you enjoy this month's wallpapers. Right click on the images below and select "save as..." to download your choice - all with the handy monthly calendar!

Wallpaper number 1 is a sunset looking across to the Acropolis, overlooking the city of Athens. In Greece, if you successfully trick someone on April 1st, many people believe that you will have good luck for the rest of the year!

Wallpaper number 2 finds us on the stunning coast of Scotland. This seal looks like he's keeping an eye out for pranks, and we don't blame him as, in Scotland, the April Fool’s festivities last two days! The first day, known as Gowkie Day, is busy with pranksters doing their best to outwit their friends (a gowkie is a bird - a cuckoo; a symbol of the fool); and the second day is called Tailie Day, where people place tails on each other’s backs!

Wallpaper number 3 takes us to Cinque Terre, Italy. We love the colours and the scenery and we simply couldn’t imagine any pranksters here, or could we? April Fools Day (or Pesce d’Aprile - April Fish) in Italy will find unsuspecting recipients discovering paper fish stuck on their backs.

And, for your bonus wallpaper, we’ve tried really hard to stay away from making any April Fool’s jokes, but we did suddenly feel inspired by the news outlets in Germany who hide one story, completely fabricated, amongst the other news on 1st April.  We do, therefore, need to report that Germany will adopt the Pound sterling as its currency in 2024 as it is a leap year and that, by law, all schnitzels, pretzels and sauerkraut will be replaced by fish and chips and mushy peas!
