Wallpaper number 1 marks the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day – 08 May 1945 - marking the end of World War II in Europe. London's celebrations at the time were emblematic of the relief and joy felt across the continent. Iconic images of crowds in Trafalgar Square and outside Buckingham Palace captured the spirit of this historic day – our image shows Trafalgar Square today.Â

Wallpaper number 2 shows us the Grand Place in Brussels, the city that is home to the European Union’s institutions. Europe Day (09 May) commemorates the Schuman Declaration, which laid the groundwork in 1950 for unity after conflict in Europe.
Wallpaper number 3 is of Paris. 01 May is commemorated across Europe as a workers’ day (May Day or Labour Day). Celebrated there as La FĂŞte du Travail, May Day in France honours workers’ rights and social progress. Rooted in both medieval traditions and modern political history, the streets of Paris often fill with processions, music and reflection.Â

And, in this month’s bonus wallpaper, we travel to Bavaria in Germany. In towns across Germany and parts of Austria, May Day is celebrated with the raising of the Maibaum, or maypole, decorated with colourful ribbons and local crests. These joyful festivities harken back to ancient fertility rites and seasonal celebrations.
